University of Chicago Press, Chicago The impact of regional trade agreements on foreign direct investment (FDI) depends on both the origin and nature of foreign direct investment. To assess the impact of FDI, I distinguish the different types of foreign direct investment using data on the sales targets of foreign subsidiaries of US multinationals (MNEs) while talking about the endogenous RTA education. In line with the MNS theory, I find that RAI reduces horizontal IDIs from intra-RTA countries and increases total export DFIs and PGI from extra-RTA countries. In addition, the overall effects of FDI on extra-RTA FDI are positive, but are inconclusive for intra-RTA FDI. The results also contribute to the impact of the economies of scale of the markets integrated into Di`s induction outside RTA.
